Game makers certainly deserve to be keelhauled for abandoning ship on bit systems and leaving millions of gamers high and dry. Thanks to Playmates, however, Genesis owners just might worm their way out of their depression this year.

Earthworm Jim 2 picks up where the last Jim left off. Jim’s out to make ol’ Psy eat crow. The ten worlds offer assorted challenges that keep the action fresh and the challenge maxed. The basic side-view action’s a blast. Our earthworm hero runs and guns through strange extraterrestrial worlds. Jim finds an arsenal of high-tech weapons littering the landscape, including mega plasma blasters, homing missiles, and the three-finger triple-shot gun. His standard weapons, of course, are the familiar Machine Gun and the Worm Whip, where Jim’s Powersuit uses him as a weapon.

All the primo hardware is necessary to blow away a gang of bad beings that includes evil cats, extraterrestrial circus performers, and blunderbuss-wielding octopi. The control boys must’ve put in overtime on Jim 2 because Jimbo moves through a wide variety of gameplay scenarios with style, grace, and precision. For instance, in Lorensen’s Soil, Jim carries the fight to a way-out underground level worthy of any worm’s earth-moving endeavors. Using an electric sandblaster, Jim pulverizes dirt and rock to burrow to the surface as pincer-head termites, icky larvae, and other underground dwellers attack him.

Here you must compensate for weightlessness as you guide Jim through mazelike passageways. There’s even a shooter level called The Flyin’ King. If your sense of humor leans toward the wicked, you’ll enjoy the finger-whacking Puppy Love bonus rounds. As PsyCrow tosses helpless puppies out of a window, you have to keep them from going “splat” by running underneath them and bouncing them off a big marshmallow. Earthworm’s visuals are killer from the ground up.

The star of the graphical show is Jim himself, who keeps things goofy with wonderfully wacky faces. He looks loopy to begin with, but he also pulls assorted smirks, grimaces, and surprised looks throughout the game.

As in every Jim game there’s also a ton of bizarre stuff such as falling grandmas, flying pigs, and end-level cows. The animation’s on overdrive, so sometimes you feel like you’re playing an interactive cartoon. Worms don’t have ears, but yours are in for a treat. The music rolls from rock to classical. You even hear Scottish and Spanish influences in the tunes. The effects are exquisite with a cacophony of yells, screams, whoas, and primo weapon blasts.

If you want a good workout, sign on with Jim. It worms your heart to find a bit game this good. Way cool! Jim’s finally made it onto a next-generation platform! For those of you who were cursing yourselves for not getting Earthworm Jim 2 on a bit system, have no fear; the world’s most violent worm is almost ready to take his bow on the Saturn.

The Saturn version of Earthworm Jim 2 features enhanced graphics and music, as well as the possibility of secret levels and even more cheat codes. Keep in mind, though, that these are only vicious rumors, and we can neither confirm or deny them. You’ll have to see for yourselves when the game is released this Spring. Many things could change from no until you can get your hands on it. Much to his dismay, Psy-Crow is back to cause trouble. The crow has taken Peter Puppy’s pups and is about to marry the princess.

What’s a worm to do? It’s better than the first! Everyone’s favorite bait, Earthworm Jim, is back for more slimy gaming in Earthworm Jim 2. If we’re lucky, they’ll bring back that old lady eating the worms for the TV ad. You know what to expect – good innovative action, with a sense of humor. It’s still a side-scroller, but not many sides-strollers are put together the way EJ is.

New powers, like inflating his head, are sure to keep this game interesting. It’s a sequel, but it’s still going to be one of the best bit games around this Christmas. Next month we’ll dissect EJ2 in a full review.

With stage names like ‘Circus of the Scars’, ‘Lorenzo’s Soil’, ‘Worm Burger’, and ‘Peter, Pound, and Mary’, you can safely bet that Jim won’t be settling down and getting all serious on us. In fact, after his appearance in the nude in Earthworm Jim Special Edition for Sega CD, we’re kind wondering how he’s gonna top himself.

With all the empty hype and lukewarm big-name releases nowadays, it’s nice to know there is one bunch you can always count on for awesome games. Shiny Entertainment opens up a can of very fun worms with Earthworm Jim 2. Who needs an expensive next-generation system when excellent bit games like Earthworm Jim 2 are still coming out? Spread out over several extraordinarily diverse stages, this epic pits Jim once more against his archenemy Psy-Crow, who’s whisking Princess-What’s-Her-Name off to Lost Vegas for a quickie wedding.

Okay, the plot is essentially the same, and so, for that matter, is the worm. But the levels ain’t. They range from a vertical ascent on a moonlit night Jim inflates and deflates his head to get to the top to a nerve-racking journey through an intestinal track Jim, transformed into a blind cave salamander, navigates wide and narrow passages lined with deadly Villi.

Tired of standard level exits? Wait until the end of the ISO stage, where the exit door runs all over the screen. Every two levels or so, Jim enters a bonus stage called Puppy Love, which replaces the rocket ride from the previous game.

Armed with a large marshmallow, Jim must frantically scramble back and forth to safely bounce a series of little puppies to the right side of the screen.

If five puppies splat on the ground, Peter will get very angry, and we know what he does when that happens. Of course, Jim wouldn’t have such a unique personality if not for the superb graphics. An improvement over the original, Jim 2 looks just like a cartoon with colorful multi- scrolling backgrounds and detailed foregrounds. Special touches include an electric chair and an iron maiden that provide a few laughs when Jim comes into contact with them and his trembling legs when he carries heavy cows, pigs, and mouse cages to safety.

Inflated Head — Avoid dangerous enemies by hitting the light bulbs. Although this damages you some, you will become momentarily invincible and your balloon won’t pop. Classical pieces like a Beethoven adagio make compellingly offbeat accompaniments to stages like Villi People. The game is also filled to the hilt with hilarious sound effects: Jim’s yelps and screams, whimpering puppies, and mooing cows are just a few of the sounds that punctuate the audio track.

Controlling Jim is a snap. His move scheme is basically the same as in the first game with the addition of two new talents: Jim can briefly block attacks, and he can use his friend Snott who travels in Jim’s backpack to grab onto sticky ceilings so Jim can cross dangerous gaps. With Snott in tow, Jim can reach 1-ups and goodies that would otherwise be unattainable. While the levels are huge and challenging, not to mention loaded with hidden areas and items, the bosses, sadly, are not.

Most of the end-level baddies take only a few hits to kill the giant larva on a unicycle at the end of Lorenzo’s Soil, for example. It’s almost as if the programmers wiped themselves out creating the levels and added the bosses as an afterthought. Earthworm Jim was the brainchild of talented folks who created Aladdin for Disney, and later formed Shiny Entertainment who would later be much more famous for MDK. The game was so successful that it inspired a whole range of toys, as well as its own TV cartoon series. What makes Earthworm Jim games a lot of fun is the excellent characterization of the hero.

Like The Simpsons, Earthworm Jim who was a lowly earthworm until he was one day accidentally given superhero powers deftly walks the line between slapstick humor and social commentary-you could even call it subversive.

Chris McMullen’s very thorough review for Games Domain describes what makes it a must-have:. For a start, there’s none of this monster squishing, or spin attacking in this game. Jim comes equipped with a big red gun, which he can fire in a number of directions, to dispatch any foe that comes his way. Then, there’s his body, which can be used to whip monsters out of the way, or can be used to swing across hooks and ravines.

Or should the worst come to the worst, he can use his head like a helicopter to guide himself away from a particularly nasty fall. There are the usual power ups to grab, such as plasma, or power ups.

Jim’s gun does drain energy, and recharges, given half a chance. But do you really want to be stuck in the middle of a load of baddies, waiting for your gun to work again?

Earthworm Jim 2 adds a little more to the formula. Jim now has a backpack companion, Snott, who can be used either as a parachute, or as a swing to swing himself across mucus encrusted ledges.

Plus, there’s [sic] even more weapons, with a homing gun, a big laser, a completely useless bubble gun, and the awesome barn gun. The latter is unfeasibly large, and when used, clears the screen of baddies, and most of the foliage, too. The levels themselves are inspired, although EWJ2’s levels are just a tad better than 1’s.

Pretty soon after the first level, things get pretty weird. Jim ends up in Heck, Evil the Cat’s domain, and is forced to outrun falling rocks, screaming meenies, and sometimes just plain run on the spot to get anywhere. Then, after yet more weirdness, Jim has to guide Peter Puppy to safety, across a number of traps. Only Peter is no ordinary puppy. Get him mad, and he’ll turn into a snarling monster, and start taking bites out of Jim.

You need to keep close behind him, keeping anything vaguely hostile out of his way, whipping him to make him jump, and so on.

EWJ2 gets even better, with a bonus sequence, where you must bounce little puppies to safety, using a big cushion. Only the puppies are thrown faster and faster, and you start diving to try and catch them. I could go on and on for ages about the levels, there’s so much to do, and no sign of boredom or repetitiveness creeping in at all.

With extremely original, inventive, and entertaining levels, numerous surprises, excellent graphics, and smooth gameplay, Activision has done justice to Jim with a righteous conversion, with same mastery that ported Pitfall!
