However, I have two reservations. The first is the bad side of comprehensive. This book is very detailed not only on the use of the programs but on what I might call meta-issues — how and why the various manipulations work. Because of all the detail and the huge size this book is not suitable as a get-started or how to do X introduction. His Lightroom Transformations is much better suited to that. Or any of Scott Kelby’s books which tend to have the opposite problem — not enough detail on important procedures and too much emphasis on how to do specific tasks.

If you’re a relative novice, it’s likely to be a waste of money. As a reference book it’s unsurpassed. The second problem is much more minor but more irritating. There is a long index, but if you don’t know the exact name of what you’re looking for, your search will likely be frustrated.

However recently I wanted to practice with what I recalled was the little dot you placed in parts of scene to manipulate exposure and other details. The technical term is Target Adjustment Tool. Martin’s books lead you through all the features in Lightroom, and is very comprehensive. The book does provide step-by-step recipes for accomplishing many common tasks so you do get some excellent guidance, but by no means is this a ‘book of recipes’.

In spite of the book’s shortcomings, I like his book. Unlike other authors who race to be the first to publish a book on a new release and missing major topic areasthe quality of Martin’s efforts is shown by his completeness for including new features or concepts or insights from the Adobe development staff.

All of these factors require post release time to get content correct. One final comment, the best way to learn, in my opinion, is to setup a throw-away LR catalog with junk pic images, and use it while reading Martin’s material.

It is detailed and very clearly written. His books’ companion websites have articles, sample images, video tutorials and updates from Martin so we can stay up-to-date when new versions of the software appear without having to buy his latest books. Not photographera is Martin a top photographer but he is also an expert in Lightroom and Photoshop and a clear and concise writer whose books are a pleasure to read and own – you’ll want to read them more than once and use them as a reference.

The book does provide step-by-step recipes for accomplishing many common tasks so you do get some excellent guidance, but by no means is this a ‘book of recipes’.

The recipe books are typically very useful if they cover the tasks you need, but do not provide the underlying reasons for doing things in their specific way. This was a tedious but necessary read for me. Light room is not intuitive and it almost seems like they Adobe are taking you somewhere you don’t want to go. For me at any rate. I thought that it was just another program to modify my photo files from digital cameras but you are really signing on to a system or a way of life if you will that will have you wedded with Adobe forever.

Having said that if after reading this book and using light room you might want to revisit every digital photo you have ever taken and reprocess them. Yep I hate it and love it but you need this book or some other book to learn what to do as Light room it is not at all intuitive. I have Martin Evening’s Photoshop book and this is the same high quality detail intensive nothing left out kind of book.

It would appear that Martin is a Photoshop insider and it may be that this allows him a view that other authors may not have. So it is all here in some pages Well illustrated some photo how to pages go on for 3 or 4 pages so the number is just a total and you will breeze through pages that show screen shots with what Mr. Martin has done during those screen shots.

Highly recomended. It’s introduction to Lightroom and explains the basics features, how to use it in your photographic workflow, and some advanced techniques in digital photo processing. I also have the essentially redundant books from Adobe Press and Scott Kelby. I prefer this book’s writing style, its features chosen to explore in detail, and the overall results from its recommended system to develop photos.

However, if you have Mr. Evening’s earlier books for Lightroom 1, 2, 3, or 4 you really don’t need this book. The changes in Lightroom between versions are mostly minor improvements with a new feature or two thrown it to get you to upgrade.

If you have a good understanding of the product from an earlier book, learning the changes from the next Lightroom release from Adobe marketing or web tutorials is a quicker and cheaper way to go. I bought versions 1 through 5 because I’m just that way.

Having read them all I now know I didn’t need to. Having a copy is essential. Having multiple is an unnecessary extravagance. This book really helped me to use Lightroom. I had for years tried to get into it but unsuccessfully. This book has an amazing index and great photos to show exactly where to click. I was so happy with this author that I ordered his book on Photoshop CC as well. These books are the ones to used. Nobody should be without them. The writing style is excellent.

The level of expected knowledge fits me exactly.

Because of all the detail and the huge size this book is not suitable as a get-started or how to do X introduction. His Lightroom Transformations is much better suited to that. If you’re a relative novice, it’s likely to be a waste of money. As a reference book it’s unsurpassed. The second problem is much more minor but more irritating. There is a long index, but if you don’t know the exact name of what you’re looking for, your search will likely be frustrated.

Excellent book especially for anyone wanting to learn the why and how to do things. Not for the casual or quick read. I had been struggling to get up to speed with Lightroom and found this book very good. It helped that I was reasonably familiar with Photoshop but then that also may have been my problem is some respects.

This is a book I am going to use for reference. Martin Evening has a long teaching and writing experience and does so clearly. It is a good idea in the first instance to follow the book page by page with LR5 running in the background containing a variety of image examples that you can practice on as you go.

Preferably pick poor exposures or contrast limited pictures to work on but almost anything will do. Highly recommended. This is a very detailed book and explains the program in great detail.

The language within the book is very technical and requires a real understanding of the science of photography. But using the book and the detailed videos within the Lightroom program it is possible to understand and use Lightroom to enhance photos.

For some people it might be too detailed, but if you want to learn everything it is the perfect book. More information, explained in a clear, concise manner than you could ever possibly memorize, this is the go-to book for those who want to become lightroom experts.
